Pushdown automata, multiset automata, and Petri nets

چکیده
In this paper, we consider various classes of (in)nite-state) automata generated by simple rewrite transition systems. These classes are de)ned by two natural hierarchies, one given by interpreting concatenation of symbols in the rewrite system as sequential composition, and the other by interpreting concatenation as parallel composition. In this way, we provide natural definitions for commutative (parallel) context-free automata, multiset (parallel, or random access, pushdown) automata, and Petri nets. We provide example automata which demonstrate the strictness of this hierarchy. In particular, we provide a proof of an earlier conjecture by Moller: that multiset automata form a proper subset of Petri nets. This result contrasts with the result of Caucal for the analogous question in the sequential case where the hierarchy collapses. c © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Using Interval Petri Nets and Timed Automata for Diagnosis of Discrete Event Systems (DES)
A discrete event system (DES) is a dynamic system that evolves in accordance with the abrupt occurrence, at possibly unknown irregular intervals, of physical events. Because of the special nature of these systems, different tools are currently used for their analysis, design and modeling. The main focus of this paper is the presentation of a new modeling approach of Discrete Event Systems. The ...
متن کاملOn Computing Reachability Sets of Process Rewrite Systems
We consider the problem of symbolic reachability analysis of a class of term rewrite systems called Process Rewrite Systems (PRS). A PRS can be seen as the union of two mutually interdependent sets of term rewrite rules: a prefix rewrite system (or, equivalently, a pushdown system), and a multiset rewrite system (or, equivalently, a Petri net). These systems are natural models for multithreaded...
متن کاملCompleteness Results for Undecidable Bisimilarity Problems
We establish Σ11-completeness (in the analytical hierarchy) of weak bisimilarity checking for infinite-state processes generated by pushdown automata and parallel pushdown automata. The results imply Σ11-completeness of weak bisimilarity for Petri nets and give a negative answer to the open problem stated by Jančar (CAAP’95): “does the problem of weak bisimilarity for Petri nets belong to ∆11?”
متن کاملThe Emptiness Problem for Valence Automata over Graph Monoids
This work studies which storage mechanisms in automata permit decidability of the emptiness problem. The question is formalized using valence automata, an abstract model of automata in which the storage mechanism is given by a monoid. For each of a variety of storage mechanisms, one can choose a (typically infinite) monoid $M$ such that valence automata over $M$ are equivalent to (one-way) auto...
متن کاملOn Simulation-Checking with Sequential Systems
We present new complexity results for simulation-checking and modelchecking with infinite-state systems generated by pushdown automata and their proper subclasses of one-counter automata and one-counter nets (one-counter nets are ‘weak’ one-counter automata computationally equivalent to Petri nets with at most one unbounded place). As for simulation-checking, we show the following: a) simulatio...
